Laser Treatments For Onychomycosis
Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is more common than you might think. In fact, 10% of people struggle with this condition, which becomes even more prevalent with age. Nail fungus is generally more common on the toenails because they grow more slowly, have less blood flow than fingers, and are often enclosed in shoes. With new laser treatments, we are able to quickly and effectively treat onychomycosis.
What Is Onychomycosis?
This condition is a fungal infection that affects the nail, nail bed, or both. It causes a thickening of the nail and discoloration to white or yellow. As a result, the toenails appear deformed or misshapen. Over time, they can begin to separate from the nail bed. A mold called dermatophyte is most often the cause (up to 90%). This mold stimulates keratin production in the nail, which leads to the characteristic thick appearance of the nail. While it’s generally not painful (although if left untreated it can cause tenderness and inflammation), it can be unsightly and embarrassing. And, sometimes conventional treatments only work temporarily. It can often reoccur after topical or oral medication.
